9. Rosé Name, Rocco's Label, Earthquakes, Hail and Veraison

Rosé Rocco, our resident drinker/penguin, has been working very hard around here so we wanted to reward him by letting him name our rosé wine. Well...you never know what you are going to get when you deal with a wine-loving penguin, but we think his chosen name is certainly going to turn a lot of heads! You can see his name choice and help him choose the label for his wine in this week's survey. This survey will close on Wednesday (27 Jan) so please take a few minutes to click though it now! As always, please feel free to invite your friends to join in on the survey fun. Nature Keeps Things Interesting On Monday Jan 18th a strong (6.8) earthquake hit just north of Mendoza. Although it was felt by the crew at our vineyard and winery, there was no damage or injuries. On Jan 4th another strong thunderstorm with large hail moved through the vineyard. This damaged some leaves and grapes and we expect a decreased yield of about 15-25% this year. The damaged grapes will dry up and drop off prior to harvest, so we don't expect any decrease in the quality of our grapes. Of note, we do not have hail nets here (which are very common in Mendoza) so that we can get the max amount of sunlight on the grapes and produce the highest quality grapes possible. Veraison Veraison is the onset of the ripening of the grapes. The official definition of veraison is "change of color of the grape berries". Veraison represents the transition from berry growth to berry ripening, and many changes in berry development occur at veraison. You can see a photo below. In this photo you will also see the hail damaged leaves and grapes. If you really want to nerd out on veraison, click here for more info.
